Start with the waterfalls
Among all the things to do in Lauterbrunnen, the falls come first because they are everywhere. By the tourism office's count, 72 waterfalls pour off the cliffs into this trough-shaped valley.5 The nearest, Staubbach, drops around 297 metres right beside the village and is free to visit.61
A short path leads to the foot of Staubbach, and Switzerland Tourism allows 30 minutes for it.7 From May to October a gallery climbs through a tunnel and up stairs behind the falling water.89 In the high season the fall is lit at night, which gives the village a second look after dark.10
Trümmelbach is the ticketed counterpart: ten glacier falls inside the mountain, reached by a tunnel lift, about 3 km up the valley.1112 Adults pay CHF 18 and children CHF 8, as read on 20 October 2026, and it is open from early April to early November.213 It makes an ideal plan for a wet day.

One way to fill a fine day
Ride up to the villages and summits
Lauterbrunnen Tourism describes the village as an ideal starting point for excursions to Mürren, the Schilthorn, Wengen, Männlichen, Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch.3 Each has its own page on this site; here is the short version of what each gives you. The lifts start from different ends of the valley: the cable car to Grütschalp leaves beside Lauterbrunnen station, the trains to Wengen leave from the station itself, and the cableway to Mürren and the Schilthorn starts at Stechelberg, reached by postbus.1418 Knowing which end you need saves a lot of waiting on a busy morning.
Mürren and Gimmelwald are car-free villages on the western terrace, reached by cable car from Lauterbrunnen via Grütschalp or from Stechelberg.14 Above them the Schilthorn at 2,970 metres has the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria.1920 On the eastern side, Wengen sits on its sunny terrace at 1,274 m, a car-free village reached by cogwheel train.21
Higher still, the Jungfraujoch is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away by train with a change at Kleine Scheidegg.22 Its station, at 3,454 metres, is the highest railway station in Europe.23 Choose one big summit per clear day; the lifts are expensive and the views depend entirely on the weather.

Waterfalls by bike

Tasting tourWith a bit of luck, you may also spot wildlife and base jumpers in the surrounding area. Lauterbrunnen is also an ideal starting point for excursions to Mürren, the Schilthorn, Wengen, Männlichen, Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch.
Walk the valley and its terraces
Walking is the valley's core activity. The flat route to Stechelberg covers 8 km in 2 hours and is rated easy, and a postal bus brings you back.3335 Up on the Mürren side, the broad path from Grütschalp to Mürren takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and faces the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.1536
For a story with your walk, the Stechelberg Legend Trail is 3.9 kilometres long and takes about 70 minutes.37 Above Mürren, the Flower Trail circles the Allmendhubel in around 20 minutes, and in summer up to 150 different mountain flowers can be seen.38 Both suit families.
The ranked list of hikes on this site covers the longer routes, from the Panorama Trail at Männlichen to the long days in the rear valley. If you want company, the guided hike this site sells walks from Grütschalp to Mürren and ends at Trümmelbach with entry included; it runs 6 hours and starts from $273.

The via ferrata between Mürren and Gimmelwald
For a via ferrata, Lauterbrunnen's nearest is the route from Mürren down to Gimmelwald. Mürren Tourism says it goes downhill, is open only from 1 June to 31 October between 09:00 and 18:00, and is graded K3, fairly difficult, on the SAC scale.4 The start is about a 10-minute walk from Mürren village.39
The route is 2.2 km long with 300 m of elevation change, and includes a 60 m zip line and an 80 m Nepal bridge.32 The zip line may only be used with a mountain guide, and equipment can be hired from Intersport in Mürren.25 It is a serious outing on cables and rungs above a big drop.
Lauterbrunnen Tourism sets limits: a minimum height of 1.50 m and a weight over 40 kg and under 100 kg.40 Go with a guide unless you have done several via ferratas before, check the weather carefully, and never start late in the day. Thunderstorms and steel cables do not mix.
Bikes and e-bikes
Cycling is the fastest way to see the valley floor. For Lauterbrunnen bike rental, the tourism office lists Imboden Bike in the village, which hires bikes and runs guided e-bike tours.34 Its hours are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.41
The tourism office publishes bike routes, including a circular route between Lauterbrunnen and Mürren and the Kleine Scheidegg Loop, and asks riders to give way to walkers.42 Lauterbrunnen Tourism also lists a Trotti bike run down to Isenfluh among the activities around the village.43 Trails are shared, so ride with care.
A guided option starts in Interlaken. The e-bike tour this page recommends follows the Lütschine river to Lauterbrunnen, Staubbach and Trümmelbach Falls, with a Swiss picnic, and gives about 3.5 to 4 hours of riding in a 6-hour day. It starts from $308, with 62 reviews averaging 4.92, and is not for bike-riding beginners.
Rainy days, culture and evenings
Bad weather has answers. Trümmelbach is inside the mountain, so rain hardly matters there.11 The Valley and Legend Museum, renamed in 2019, opens from mid-June to mid-October on Tuesdays and Thursday to Sunday, 2 to 5.30 p.m.4427 Admission starts at CHF 7.00 and is free for holders of the Lauterbrunnen Valley Guest Card.26
Food tours fill an afternoon too. A cheese and chocolate tasting tour in Lauterbrunnen lasts 165 minutes and starts from $230, with 4 reviews averaging 5.0. In Wengen, a sunset hike with cheese fondue lasts 3.5 hours. Both make a good end to a day of walking.
Keep an eye on the sky and the cliffs. Lauterbrunnen Tourism says that with luck you may spot wildlife and base jumpers in the surrounding area.3 Paragliders launch from Mürren as well, and the tourism office lists paragliding among the valley's activities.43 Drones, however, are not permitted anywhere in the valley.45
Seasonal highlights
The valley's calendar shapes what you can do. In September the cattle come down from the alpine pastures, and Lauterbrunnen Tourism announces the dates shortly beforehand.46 The falls are strongest in spring and early summer, when meltwater feeds them.47
In winter the waterfalls freeze and Trümmelbach and the Staubbach paths close.48 Lauterbrunnen Tourism lists a cross-country trail of around 16 kilometres alongside the frozen falls.49 The sun shines on the valley floor for little more than an hour around the shortest day, so winter days feel short down there.50
Summer is the main season for hiking, lifts and the via ferrata, which only opens from June.4 Autumn brings quieter paths and changing colour, though some lifts close for maintenance. Plan big outings around the clearest days, and keep a waterfall or a museum in reserve for the rest. Whatever the month, keep one flexible day in your plans so that the clearest weather goes to the highest ground.
