Quick answer
From Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn the journey starts on the road. Schilthornbahn's arrival page tells visitors to change at Interlaken Ost for Lauterbrunnen, where a postbus runs to the valley station of the Schilthorn cableway in Stechelberg.1 From there the cableway climbs in stages via Mürren and Birg to the summit.
The first stage is the newest. From Stechelberg at 866 m to Mürren at 1641 m the cableway takes about 4 minutes, climbs 775 metres and reaches a maximum gradient of 159.4%, which Schilthornbahn calls a world record.5 It opened on 14 December 2024.6 Above Mürren the line continues to Birg and then to the top.
There is a second approach via the other side of the valley. Schilthornbahn sells a round trip via Grütschalp, which uses the cable car and railway from Lauterbrunnen to reach Mürren.7 Going up one way and down the other costs no more and lets you see both terraces of the valley in one outing.
Valley to summit
Schilthornbahn gives two different travel times on its own pages. The arrival page says the cable car takes 24 minutes to the summit at 2970 m.12 The Piz Gloria page says the trip takes 32 minutes.13 Plan around the longer figure and enjoy any time you save.
Add the connections. From Lauterbrunnen you first need the postbus to Stechelberg, and on the way up you change cabins at the intermediate stations. Birg, the last of them, sits at 2677 metres, about 1000 m above the village of Mürren.8 Each change takes a few minutes, and the views from every platform are worth a pause.
So how to get to Schilthorn from Lauterbrunnen efficiently? Leave early, catch a bus that meets a cableway departure in Stechelberg, and ride straight through to the top while the air is clear. Stop at Birg and Mürren on the way down instead, when the summit is done and clouds may be building.

The Schilthorn - Piz Gloria is world famous for its 360-degree revolving restaurant and as the film location for the iconic Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
The summit building is Piz Gloria, at 2,970 metres and surrounded by more than 200 alpine peaks.2 Schilthornbahn says it is world famous for its 360-degree revolving restaurant and as the film location of the Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service.10
The restaurant rotates around its own axis in 45 minutes, so a leisurely meal shows you the whole panorama without leaving your seat.15 On a clear day the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau stand opposite, and the view runs far beyond them across the Bernese Alps. Book ahead or arrive outside peak lunch hours if you want a window table.
The summit has a long history as a destination. Schilthornbahn credits Ernst Feuz from Mürren and a group of pioneers with making the summit accessible to the public by cableway in 1967.16 Today the station holds terraces, the restaurant and exhibits, and the guided tour this page recommends includes Bond World 007, an exhibition on the film.

Do not skip the intermediate station. Birg stands on the rock massif at 2677 metres, and Schilthornbahn presents it as the ideal starting point for hikes.8 Its main attraction is the Thrill Walk, a steel path bolted to the cliff below the station.
The Thrill Walk includes a crawl-through tunnel, a glass-bottomed floor, a rope section and a cattle grid, and admission is free of charge.9 It is short, but the drop beneath your feet is very real. Anyone with a fear of heights can watch from the platform above, which has its own sweeping view of the peaks.
Fit walkers can climb from Birg to the summit on foot. Schilthornbahn describes this summit hike as an ascent of over 350 metres, rated challenging, taking 1.5 hours.41 It is high-alpine ground, so it needs good boots, settled weather and experience on steep, rocky paths.
Schilthornbahn lists its fares online. A Schilthorn return ticket costs adults CHF 115.00 from Stechelberg or CHF 91.40 from Mürren, valid until 12 December 2026, as read on 20 October 2026.3 With the Swiss Half Fare Card the same trips cost CHF 57.50 and CHF 45.70, and with a GA travelcard or Swiss Travel Pass CHF 45.70.3
The round trip via Grütschalp costs adults CHF 115.00 from Lauterbrunnen and CHF 135.20 from Interlaken, again with lower prices for Half Fare and pass holders.7 Children aged 6 to 15 pay CHF 57.50 from Stechelberg.3 Check your railcard first, because the difference between full fare and a pass price is large.
If you only want Mürren, the lower section alone costs CHF 11.80 one way from Stechelberg, and nothing with a GA or Swiss Travel Pass.14 The Schilthorn is a big outlay for a family, so choose a clear day and give yourselves time at the top to make it worth it.
The cableway closes for maintenance twice a year. Schilthornbahn lists closures from 19 to 30 October 2026, 26 April to 7 May 2027 and 28 to 29 October 2027, with a replacement shuttle bus via Mürren from 8 am to 6 pm, limited seats and possible waiting.4
Weather matters more than season. The summit stands at 2,970 metres, so cloud can sit on it while the valley is clear, and the reverse happens too.2 Check the summit webcam before you buy, and keep the day flexible if your schedule allows. The revolving restaurant shows nothing but white when the summit is in cloud.
Dress for winter even in summer. The terraces are exposed and the wind is cold at that height. Sunglasses and sun cream are essential when snow lies on the surrounding peaks, which it often does well into summer. A warm drink in Piz Gloria is part of the experience either way.
The guided day this page recommends is a small-group tour from Interlaken Ost. Its itinerary takes the train to Lauterbrunnen and on via Stechelberg, the cable car up with an optional Thrill Walk stop, 2 hours at the Schilthorn with lunch at the revolving restaurant, Bond World 007 and the Skyline View platform, then a 1-hour walk in Mürren.
It lasts 7 hours, with a live guide in English, French and German. It starts from $447 and has 11 reviews averaging 4.59. The listing notes that children must be accompanied by an adult and that a moderate amount of walking is involved.
Going alone is cheaper and just as easy once you know the route. The guided option suits travellers who want transport, lunch and commentary arranged in one booking. Either way, combine the Schilthorn with Mürren on the way down, where the car-free streets make a calm contrast to the summit.
